Pollença Tours

Cloister of ST. Domingo´s Convent
It is a construction started by the Dominican fraires at the end of the XVI th century and finished in 1616. Its sober style satands out in its architectonic elements among the peculiar time.

Nowadays it has become a natural stage of several cultural activites such as the Pollença Music Festival, The Municipal Museum and other cultural activities.

Nostra senyora del Rosari Church
Basilical base with barrel roof and side/chapels. The high altar-piece, with the holy Virgin image, a XV th c. Sculpture. Between the tombs is found one of the Pollença's hero Joan Mas. The church has a baroque organ built in 1732 by Luis Navarro.

Museum Pollença
It shows a contemporany painting collection created as a result of the International Painting Contest. There is also the Atilio Boveri collection, the Gothic Paintings and the prehistoric room, which includes "Els Braus de la punta", a wood piece of rekigius-funerary sense of the IV th c. b.C.

Gothic Tower of Joan March Gardens
It raises among the gardens of Joan March, as a part of the remains of the house of Desbrull Marquis. We can contemplate there an old artillery piece which belonged to the defensive tower of Cala Sant Vicenç (XV th c.). The gardens show interesting examples of Mallorcan plants.

Casa consistorial (Town hall)
Since 1882 the Town Council occupies a part of the Moti-Sion building built by the Jesuits between 1696 and 1738. It has an interesting session hal, restored in the style of the age (XVII th c.). Ot has a collection of pictorial pictures of illustrious and adoptive sons of the village.

Temple of Monti-Sion
It was raised by the Jesuits an finished in 1738. A baroque style on a Gothic base with half barrel vault. Fluted pilasters with framework stands and artistic medallions which frame painting. Abandoned for a century, the poet Costa I Llobera and others restored it in 1891. From 1905 to 1982 it was looked after by the Teatin Fathers. Today it is not used for worship.

Nostra senyora dels Angels Parish Church
Baroque temple built during the XVIII th c. Until the XIX th c. It belonged to hospitals of San Juan de Malta. The altar-piece, 1754, comes from the old churchof Monti-Sion. Fourteen big pictures representing the Via Crucis can be seen here, painted by Atilio Boveri (Argentinian), Eugen Mossgraber (German) and Juaquin Tudela (Spanish) at the beginning of the century.

St. Jordi´s Church
A small oratory, with basilical base and side-chapel. The front, with ogival door and rose window, is from the XIX th c. The oratory was a meeting point for the ancient Pollença´s militia before going out to defend the coast from Moorish incursions. A little statue of holy Mother is venerated on the main altar, and was foun in ariant in 1605.

El Calvari I El Pont Roma
(Stations of the cross and the Roman Bridge)

Small hill accessible either by car or on foot through a stairway wich begins in Jesus street, next to de town Council. It has 365 steps With cypress trees lining both sides. The top flight dates from the end of the XVIII th c. With appear to be neo-classical influences introduced by Cardinal Despuig. Via Crucis with centenary crosses of three metres, high.

The oratory dates from the end of the XVIII th c., with neo-gothic restoration of the 60´s. Guarded there is the Statue of the "Mare de Deu del Peu de lna Creu" (Mother of God at the foot of the cross), of one piece, attributed to the XIII th or XIV th c. There some view points from wich we can observe the geographical configuration of Pollença. From here and going down fron the Creus and Gruat streets we get to the Pont Romà (Roman Bridge).

Pictoresque spots in the village
From Lleo Street a group of streets that maintain a traditional village architectonic style can be visited: stone-work fronts, archways, wicked windows, etc. These elements that together with the lay out of the streets make it a pintoresque place: Bonavista, Estrella, Salut, Padronada, Bou, Rost de Monti-Sion streets and walking down the Monte-Sion Street, we can neither ignore the historical square of Lalmonia, presided by a fountain from 1827 and crowned by a cockerel – the heraldic symbol of Pollença. Following through the temple street, wich owes its name to the Templars Quarter, Whose heraldic shield can be seen on one of the walls, and walking through the Carrero del Vent (Wind Passage) we arrive at the Old Square "Plaça Vella", Where one of the most popula festivities of the village is celebrated yearly, Sant Antoni.

Roser Vell Oratory
At the beginning of Roser Vell Street, we find a typical public fountain with a statue of San Isidre dated from the end of the XIX th c. At the end of long street we find the Medieval Oratory (XVI-XV th. C.), restored during the XX th c. The gothic Temple chelters a squlpture group known as "Les Maries del Roser Vell" (The Roser Vell Maries) of the same period as the construction of the building. The side doorway belongs to the Gothic period.

El Puig De Maria
Shrine situated at the height of 330 metres, at the edge of Pollença. Chapel, refectory, tower and defence walls were all built between the end of the XIV th and XV th c. The Gothic style outstands. The refrectory is one of the most notable pieces in Mallorca. The Church, with a single aisle, preserves a popular image of the Holy Virgin from the XIV th c. It was an important monastery and abandoned for a long time. From the XVII th c. It has been run by hermits, benefactors, nuns and lays. A stone way from the XVII th c. is still maintained. Although there is a small plot accessible for vehicles it is advisable to do it on foot, as there is no parking place and the road becomes a track. It is about one hour and a half walk.

Santuïri
Public green area situated 1,5 kms. From Pollença on the Pollença-Bahia de Pollença road. It is a place of great landscape and botanic interest. It has public facilities.

El Castell del Rei (The Kings Castle)
Is in a strategic position, and possibly and Arab construction over some other primitive one. The track crosses the fertile area of Pollença, with traces of waterwheels, chanels, water-mils and the popular fountain of "Lalgaret".

It is also possible to see the ancient hermitage of "LA Cel.La". Built on Ternelle mountain range at a height of 476 metres adove impressive sea-cliffs that look on the Mediterranean Sea. Excelent natural view-point. Place of inspiration to poets. Abandoned at the beginning of the XVIII th c., nowadays it only preserves the surrounding walls, a few tower ruins and the back entrance. The average walking time is two and a half hours.

Cala San Vicenç Prehistoric Caves
They are at the public park and the historic enclosure of the urbanization, Lalzineret of Cala de San Vicenç, on the right hand side driving into la Cala. Funerary caves belonging to the Mediterranean bronce age. Necropolis, considered as one of the best monuments of its gender of the occidental Mediterranean; especially cave number 7, a real architectural gem, about 3500 years old.

Cala Boquer
From the same name urbanization and walking through the Boquer houses, the way to a lonely an unspoilt creek. On the left side "La Sierra del Cavall Bernat" (The horse Bernat mountain range), with its carasteristics crests of up to 360 metres adove sea-level. At its foot we find important building from the "Talaiot" epoque – the origin of the pre-Roman town of Bocchoirs, wich is about 3000 years old. Next to track there is a small drinking-water fountain. The area has a great ornithological interest. Among the especies of vegetation we can find "garbellons" (palm-tree plant) and some orchids.

Talaia D´albercuix (Alebercuix View tower)
Warnig tower built at the end of the XVI th c. by order of the great general council, to warn about the Moorish landings. It is raised at the beginning of Formentor´s mountain chain, at a height of 380 metres. It dominates almost the entire Pollença seabord, El Castell del Rei I la Talaia. There are some buildings and tunnels from the civil war (1937). There is a radio beacon for navigation. From the parking and view-point of "La Creueta" (the little Cross) there is twenty minutes walk.

Formentor
Its one of the most beautiful and visited places in the island, a meeting place for intellectuals, politics and artists. From Formentor and following the road to the light-house we find some creeks of incomparable beauty, Cala Figuera on the left, Cala Murta and Cala Engossauba on the right. The road ends on the light-house of Formentor, wich is northmost point in Mallorca.
