Important information to remember whilst driving a hire car in Spain

Driving licence requirements in Spain

EC driving licences are recognised. You should have an international permit if you have the old style license. Ensure that you carry this document as well as all car rental paperwork at all times in your hire car. Failure to do so can result in fines.

Speed limits in Spain

Residential areas 20 Kph (12 mph)
Built-up areas 50 Kph (31 mph)
Outside towns 90 kph; (56 mph)
Major roads outside towns 100 kph (62 mph)
Motorways 120 kph (74 mph)

Traffic fines

Fines for traffic offences must be settled on the spot unless you can present a bail bond or Spanish guarantor. Failure to pay can result in the hire car being impounded and the driver detained.

Seat belts

Driver and passengers in cars throughout Spain (including car rentals) must wear seat belts.

Children in cars

To sit in the front of a hire car, children under 12 years of age must be seated in an approved child seat.

Parking your car

In city centres Zona Horas are available for public parking for between 30 - 90 minutes and require tickets purchased from a tobacconist. Zona Azul (Blue areas) are also common and you can purchase tickets from hotels, travel agents, town halls or the ticket machines located along the sides of the road. A useful thing to remember is that if your car is unlucky enough to recieve a ticket in one of the blue zones go to one of the machines and take out one of the small brown envelopes. Pop in 3 euros (or whatever amount it says on the machine) along with your ticket and post it back into the machine at the top. This will nullify the ticket and avoid any heavy fines.
Parking your car is not allowed within 5 metres of intersections or entrances to public buildings.

Toll roads

The motorways contain toll booths and usually cost 2 or 3 euros depending on the time that you are driving. The toll roads (Peajes) are large and fast and make long distance journeys much easier than the Autovias which often go through towns and built up areas.

Things you must make sure are present in your hire car

A hire car must carry the following:

  • 2 Warning Triangles (In case of breakdown) Put one about 50 ft in front of the car and the about 50ft behind. This is especially important whilst driving your car down the N340 in Andalucia where there are only 2 lanes and no hard shoulder.
  • Spare Bulb Kit
  • Spare Wheel
