Free wireless broadband router from Telefonica?

Movistar (Telefonica) in Spain are currently offering a free wireless router with their latest broadband package which is laughable, once again highlighting how much more we have to pay in Spain for such basic services as Broadband internet.

Cost of Telefonica's latest broadband package (including the 'free wireless router'):

  • Free Line Installation - Value: 83.53€
  • Free wireless router - Value: 59.95€
  • One off set up fee – Cost to you:49.00€

Fees for the Broadband usage (Monthly – Line speed not specified)

  • 19.90€  - 1st year
  • *41.90€  - Year 2

In year 2 they are going to charge you double – 41.90 a month! And the download speed is not specified in the offer but I would guess its either 3mb or 6mb. 10mb download speed is limited by area and not that common.

Then there is the monthly line rental charge of 13.97€.

Total cost to you to have this Broadband package for 24 months – 958.24€.

A note about the 'free wireless router'
Telefonica sends out these wireless routers in the millions and therefore buys them in the millions. I doubt very much that the Value or Cost to them is anywhere near the figure of 59.95€. You can get much better and cheaper wireless routers in almost any electronics store you choose than the models they use.
